Luis Gabriel Cuervo

Complete Biography

Luis Gabriel Cuervo is a Medical Doctor with a MSc in Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics from the Universidad Javeriana, and qualified as a Specialist in Family Medicine at the Universidad del Valle, Colombia . He brings first hand experience as producer and user of evidence for health care in the clinical, academic, and research fields working in various communities in rural and urban environments in Colombia . He has developed a career around knowledge management including summarizing evidence and developing strategies to systematically inform policy and health care with research evidence. From his position as Clinical Editor at BMJ Clinical Evidence he emphasized evidence based programmes and access to developing countries and worked closely with the World Health Organization and International NGOs including the Cochrane Collaboration and INCLEN. More recently he has coordinated the response of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to the 2004 Mexico Declaration on Health Research. In September 2005 Luis Gabriel Cuervo joined PAHO/WHO when he was appointed Chief of the Research Promotion & Development Unit.

The Alliance Manager, Dr Sara Bennett, has a PhD in health economics from the London School of Economics and degrees from Oxford and Cambridge Universities . She brings to the Alliance position nearly 20 years of experience in conducting and managing a wide range of health policy and systems research studies in developing countries.

John N. Lavis, MD PhD, is the Canada Research Chair in Knowledge Transfer and Exchange, an Associate Professor (in both the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Department of Political Science), and a Member of the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis at McMaster University . His principal research interests include knowledge transfer and exchange in public policymaking environments and the politics of healthcare systems. He directs the Program in Policy Decision-Making, a research program affiliated with McMaster’s Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis, and he wrote the report that underpins the chapter on “linking research to action” in the World Report on Knowledge for Better Health.

Ms. MAYLENE M. BELTRAN took her Master in Public Administration at the University of the Philippines and also in the same university, earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Concomitant with her leadership functions as the Director of the HPDPB, she is also the Chairperson of the EVIPNET Asia Steering Group and co-chairs in the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Technical Secretariat.

Dr. Reijo SALMELA, national of Finland , has been the responsible officer for health research and WHO collaborating centres in the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific since 2004. He has been coordinating EVIPNet in the five Asian countries in the regional office, and is co-chair of the EVIPNet Asia steering group.

Pierre Ongolo Zogo conceived and completed installation as well as the creation of a national commission on health research. The Division comprise a clinical research unit, a scientific networks unit and a public health laboratory known as “Hygiène Mobile”. He is leading a team of close to twenty staff including two MD with a MPH, a consultant neurologist, a pharmacist, a micorbiologist, two sociologists, two senior nurses with public health skilss, five laboratory technicians as well as four administrative staff.
